Getting Ready For Juneteenth!

Juneteenth is a US holiday that began on June 19, 1865. A Texas tradition with BBQ picnics, watermelon, red soda, and other southern celebratory treats, Juneteenth is a time to reflect on our collective past, and come together to build a brighter future.

Juneteenth is a social holiday and perfect for community building. It was that day in 1865, that the US Government hand delivered orders to the state of Texas declaring that all slaves were heretofore free men and women. Celebrations broke out as news traveled across Texas and Juneteenth was born.

Similar to the 4th of July, Juneteenth is a summer celebration about freedom, not from another nation, but from the oppression of slavery. It is an inclusive celebration for all people excited about equality. Only through close and frank examination of our history can we understand the society we live in, and take action to build a better tomorrow.

Build up your community, make friends with your neighbors, visit with family and enjoy some soul food on June 19th. As far as decorations go – pick and choose your favorite summer aesthetics. This is a celebration so have fun with it!

On Juneteenth we enjoy water-guns, and slip-n-slides with plenty of sunscreen in the afternoon. Later, we eat a meal of southern comfort foods, drink chilled beverages and make dessert out of sweet watermelon slices. Under the patio lights we watch the sunset and talk about where our nation has been, current events, and what we can do to create the kind of future we want to live in.

Join us in the spirit of Juneteenth, invite your friends and family to chart a course to a better future. Together we can build it!
