The Silver Mercury dime is perhaps the most classic American coin pendant. Designed by AA Weinman and minted from 1916 until 1945, left-facing Mercury is not Mercury at all. Instead the designer engraved Lady Liberty in the Phrygian cap. The wings denotes freedom of thought, similar to Mercury’s winged shoes denoting swift action. On the reverse, a bundle of wooden rods are bound to an axe, similar to the design on numerous French coins. These designs indicate the requirement of a content citizenry for the Republic to flourish. If leaders unbind the rods to use on the citizens, then they too unbind the axe for citizens to use on the leaders.
