The Silver Mercury dime is perhaps the most classic American coin pendant. Designed by AA Weinman and minted from 1916 until 1945, left-facing Mercury wears the Phrygian cap. His winged hat denotes freedom of thought, similar to his winged shoes denoting his swift action. On the reverse, a bundle of wooden rods are bound to an axe, similar to the design on numerous French coins. These designs indicate the requirement of a content citizenry for the Republic to flourish. If leaders unbind the rods to use on the citizens, then they too unbind the axe for citizens to use on the leaders.
