1951 was the first year of the Berlin International Film Festival. Also known as the Berlinale, the first event was a summer affair taking place in West Berlin from June 6th to the 17th, however, the event moved to February in 1977 and it remains a winter film festival to this day. Each year films from all over the world are reviewed and judged, the best of which receive the Bear awards and Medals.
