Nickels > Dimes: Investing

As we move away from fossil fuels the nickel in nickels will gain more value.

One electric vehicle (EV) battery requires about 77 pounds of nickel, in addition to other metals. Increased public interest in EVs drives the price of battery components up on the stock market. That increase means your nickel collection is worth more.

US nickels are composed of 25% nickel and 75% copper. In 2022, the average US nickel had a precious metal content worth $0.16. Today, with nickel use growing year over year, your collection and your pocket-change nickels are worth even more.

The last time nickel peaked was in 2007; driven by the building boom in China. Experts argued that the need for construction steel in emerging markets would keep the nickel price high, and it did until the building boom went bust.

The interest in EVs has waxed and waned over the past decades, each time enticing more interested parties at the investor and end-consumer levels. The Tesla car company has done wonders to advance EV technology quickly, and now Toyota offers four EV options that utilize the same nickel battery technologies.

For long-term investing, our money is on nickel.
