The Ryedale Hoard and 3K Coins

In 2020, two amateur metal detectorists were milling about a field in North Yorkshire, England. They found a treasure of bronze statuettes, a plumb bob, four ingots, and 65 silver Roman coins.

After reporting their find to the local authorities, the pieces were on display at a local auction house. The auctioneers estimated the value of the hoard at something close to £80,000.

A month after the appraisal the hoard sold for £185,000 to a private buyer.

Not six months later, the hoard changed hands again. The Yorkshire Museum purchased the hoard and sent it on tour, to London. Upon its return, it was put on display at The Yorkshire Museum.

3D imaging of coins

Today, the Yorkshire Museum is bringing the Ryedale Hoard and its stunning Numismatic collection into the virtual world with 3D scans.

In addition to the Rydale Hoard, the Walkington, Heslington, York Viking, Ryther, and Civil War hoards of coins are going to be scanned with a hand-held scanner.

The 3D images will allow coin collectors to examine each coin in detail without booking tickets to Yorkshire.
