If it’s hot outside, you can make the most of the weekend with a movie night. This list contains five treasure-hunting movies for all the critics in your house. There is something for everyone on the list but we tried to avoid the blockbuster pirates and big money hunter movies we all know and love. So let’s get to it.
For the classic movie buff we have, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, based on the novel of the same name. The movie stars Humphrey Bogart, came out in 1948, and is set in the 1920s. In a nutshell, two Americans travel to Mexico and enlist the help of a prospector. Things are going well until they find the gold.
IMDB = 8.2 Rotten Tomatoes = Critics 100%, Audience 93%
If you are in the mood for a foreign film, check out The Hidden Fortress. This film was made in Japan in 1958 and set during feudal times. It’s not a comedy of errors, but it could be, as two bumbling peasants are tricked into escorting an enemy princess and her general across territory lines, hoping to gain some gold.
IMDB = 8.1 Rotten Tomatoes = Critics 96% , Audience 92%

If you’ve got kids to entertain try Kubo and the Two Strings (PG). This animated movie came out in 2016 and is set sometime in a fantasy past, in Japan. The treasure in this movie is a suit of armor, and finding it is the quest. Unlike other children’s movies, this one gives you plenty of opportunity to talk with the kids about choice and consequence, life, and loss. It is exciting and will keep your older kids’ attention. It also has some scary scenes, so I feel the PG rating is accurate as a fellow parent.
IMDB = 7.7 Rotten Tomatoes = Critics 97%, Audience 86%
For those deadpan members of the audience who love dry humor *hack, hack* may I suggest The Treasure. This is a Romanian film from 2016 and it is so funny – if you like the droll, dry, humor of Murphy’s Law, “Anything that can go wrong, will.” This movie serves as a delightful reminder to never give up. The treasure hunt involves a web of excuses, complicated lives, promises made, and a metal detectorist. It starts slow, but it is worth the wait.
IMDB = 6.7 Rotten Tomatoes = Critics 95%, Audience 40%
Last on the list, Black Sea, is a 2014 movie wherein the crew of a submarine searches for lost treasure, amid tension, distrust, and a language barrier. This movie is a thriller, and Jude Law delivers an impeccable performance. This is an edge-of-your-seat nailbiter as we watch greed engulf the crew. Each death just means a larger share of the treasure, so what’s a little murder in the depths of the sea?
IMDB = 6.4 Rotten Tomatoes = Critics 80%, Audience 59%
