What is Permanent Jewelry?
Jewelry that you cannot take off is permanent jewelry; usually a bracelet, sometimes an anklet, or a necklace.
Why is Permanent Jewelry a good idea?
- It is very difficult to lose Permanent Jewelry.

Why is Permanent Jewelry a bad idea?
- You cannot take it off, or swap it for another piece that better matches your mood, outfit, or activity.
- It is harder to keep Permanent Jewelry clean.
- Permanent Jewelry is not like a tattoo because a tattoo is part of you, whereas jewelry is not.
- Jewelry snags on clothes, in doorways, or otherwise catches on objects. If you can’t remove the jewelry then you are stuck.
- Historical examples of Permanent Jewelry include slave shackles.
- Many medical procedures – including no invasive scans, require you to remove your jewelry.
- Soldering or welding jewelry on a person can cause burns.
What are alternatives to Permanent Jewelry?
Fine jewelry that you can take off and put back on again is the best alternative to Permanent Jewelry. Swapping out pendants on a gold or silver chain can provide you with options that Permanent Jewelry cannot.
Changing the charm(s) on a charm bracelet, or anklet is much more enjoyable than being tied up in a single style for the rest of your life.
How to remove Permanent Jewelry
If you are regretting your Permanent Jewelry decisions, know that you are not alone. 💙
Disclaimer: Pendant and Ring is not responsible for any injury or injuries incurred by any cutting devices used to modify any jewelry product in any way.
You can remove the jewelry by cutting a link in the chain with jewelry side cutters. Side cutters look like small pliers but have sharp cutting surfaces rather than gripping surfaces. If the chain is made of fine gold or Sterling silver, then a sharp pair of scissors or a pair of clean garden sheers should be able to cut through one of the metal links.
If your chain is thick, or made of an alloy it will be harder to cut. Enlist the help of a friend to remove your thick or stainless steel Permanent Jewelry. You may need a stronger cutting device. A bolt cutter should cut through any Permanent Jewelry, even stainless steel, and very thick chains.
Take all necessary precautions, use common sense, and do not attempt to use bolt cutters to remove your Permanent Jewelry by yourself.
What can I do with old Permanent Jewelry?
Now that you have freed yourself from Permanent Jewelry you can take it to your local jeweler and ask them to solder a clasp and link onto the chain. Most fine jewelry stores can assist you for a small fee.
We hope you enjoy your jewelry, and enjoy switching it up whenever you like.
