If someone told you, “You can’t wear gold,” or, “Gold is not your color,” but the lure of the shiny, rich, buttery metal adored by humans for millennia still calls to you – you are not alone.
You can wear gold.
Just find your perfect gold shade.
For years, I wore silver because I believed gold wasn’t my color. I don’t remember who told me that, but it stuck, and every time I looked at shiny summer gold hoops or gold threads in autumn scarves, I kept walking.
Then, one day, I saw a beautiful display of chains at a jewelry store. One was 24k gold, another was 14k gold, another was white gold, and then there were multiple rose gold chains in different hues. All of these gold colors couldn’t look bad on me. So I tried gold, one color at a time, and developed three rules of thumb that helped me glitter in gold.
How to identify your skin tone.
The tone of your skin is not the color of your skin. You can have warm tones, cool tones, or neutral tones. To find out what your skin tone is, all you need is a sheet of printer paper. Go outside, face the sun, and hold the sheet of paper behind your wrist so you can see the color of your veins. Decide if your veins look closer to blue or green or if your veins are right in the middle. If your veins look closer to green, you have warm undertones. If your veins are closer to blue, you have cool undertones. If it’s hard to pick, then you have neutral undertones.

If you have warm or neutral undertones, you can wear any gold you like and look fantastic. I don’t know who told you gold “was not your color,” but centuries of color theory would say otherwise.
How to pick the best clothes.
Cool-toned people shine in jewel tones. Jewel tones are primary and secondary colors. They include red, yellow, blue, green, orange, and purple. These colors look great with gold. Jewel tones and gold accents shine in every illuminated manuscript and most Disney storybooks.
When you wear jewel tones, your cool hues shine, and gold jewelry does too.
How to find your favorite shade of gold.
If you have cool undertones, you can wear gold. Try every shade and decide which one (or two) you like best. I found that 12k gold and lighter shades of rose gold work for me. Even though these golden hues are less yellow than the 24k, they look yellower against my cool-tone skin.
When you wear what you want, you feel confident, and confidence looks good.
