Jewelry or Jewellery

Both are correct. It depends on where you live.

The English language originated on the English Isles, combining Old French and Old German dialects.

Modern English emerged in the late 1600s after the Great Vowel Shift occurred on the English Isles. During the two preceding centuries, Middle English speakers developed new sounds for long vowels and silent letters that eroded phonetic spelling and ushered in Modern English.

During the first half of the 1700s, English speakers developed standardized spelling. They spelled Jewelry with two Ls and an additional E.

During the second half of the 1700s, the Revolutionary Period led to many changes. English speakers in the British Isles stopped voicing the internal Rs so an American faRmer sounded different than a British faHmer.

Additionally, English speakers in America developed a spelling shorthand to save money in newspaper ads, as printmakers charged by the letter.

The newspaper spelling took off in the New World, and the gap between King’s English and American English grew.

The US prefers the one L spelling Jewelry.
In Canada, both Jewelry and Jewellery are correct.
The UK and Australia prefer the two L spelling Jewellery.
